We had a scare a couple of nights ago!!! All of a sudden our landline phone starts ringing and our cell phones start having emergency notifications. “There’s a fire in Sam Houston National Forest and you have to evacuate, NOW!!” That’s where we live. In the forest. Oliver and I immediately turned on the TV and grabbed a few suitcases. We threw pictures, documents, medicine, family treasures, irreplaceable items and an overnight bag together as quickly as we could. We were calm, but it was stressful. As we looked around, we were trying to select a few items to preserve in case we lost everything. Immediately, I began thinking about the fires that happened in the Palisades recently. My heart was pounding. This was the first time we ever did this….having to make serious and selective choices in a very short few minutes….what could we fit in the truck and still have room for our dog, Patton. Thank God… This was just a “drill…” if you will. Our house did not burn. We dodged a bullet. But… What it did do, is remind us that life is short and things happen. Today, after I get my wits back about me, I’m writing a list of things down that I would do differently if this ever happens again. Which suitcases to grab? Which pictures are a must have and other items that need to be in our go bag!!! Maybe… just maybe… You were meant to hear this story so that you could prepare in the case you have to leave your home suddenly. I know I’m saying my prayers for those families impacted by the fires last night here in Sam Houston National Forest and thanking God that we were spared. A good reminder not to take anything for granted!!!!!!
