If you’re flying into the U.S., you need to know this: Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents can legally search your electronic devices at the airport or any U.S. port of entry. There are two types of searches—basic searches, where they scroll through your phone manually, and advanced searches, where they plug your device in and extract data for analysis. You are not required to provide your password—but refusing to do so could mean your device is seized. And if you’re on a visa, you could be denied entry.
