Meet Mr Bean! Rescued as a newborn, this tiny warthog is rivalled only by bushbaby Spencer in terms of his diminutive stature, but size isn't everything! After guzzling down his favourite treat, he tears around the compound, regularly showcasing his signature trick: ‘When Pigs Fly!’ While he’s not on our orphan foster program, you can still treat Mr Bean this Halloween with a donation at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate #mrbean #sheldricktrust #pig #warthog #animals #orphan #animalrescue #kenya #bean #sheldrickwildlifetrust #milk #trick #treat #cute

15 minutes to save a life and spare an elephant agonising pain and suffering. Snares pose a lethal threat to wildlife. Left unchecked, these rudimentary devices can take down even nature’s greatest giants. We have witnessed the fatal consequences of snares far too many times: limbs severed, lives lost. Read the full story of how our Airwing and SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit ensured that on this occasion, the potential victim walked away before irreparable damage was done: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news #sheldricktrust #veterinary #vet #treatment #snare #kenya #wildfire #elephant #aerial #helicopter #animals #sheldrickwildlifetrust

Newborn baby Sid makes a big entrance! Sid is the third calf of ex-orphan Sidai. He came into the world on 26th September and, within 24 hours, we were giving the privilege of meeting Sid. Sidai chose to bring him to the orphans midday mud bath, proving the opportunity for his extended elephant family to celebrate in his arrival - elephants love a big fanfare. A few mornings later, Sidai and Sid -his brothers Silas and Sita and behind - came to enjoy Ithumba’s breakfast buffet of lucerne, laid out daily by the Keepers during the dry season. Sleep can sneak up on all of us! Warmed by the sun and with a belly full of milk, Korbessa kept drifting off to dreamland… only to startle herself awake again! Her attempt at an ever so casual – I was awake all along - exit didn’t quite go quite to plan, but it created the best and biggest smile of our day. Rescued from a well, Korbessa is one of over 75 orphaned elephants currently reliant on us. Two months ago, our fixed-wing pilot spotted an elephant with an arrow wound. He was a big bull, and given the location of the injury, he had likely been targeted by poachers. Unfortunately, before we could mobilise a treatment, the bull vanished into the wilderness. Then, earlier this month, the very same bull was sighted. He was in the company of two other bulls — but worryingly, his wound was still present. The pilot circled around, took photos of the injury, and sent them to Dr Limo of the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit for inspection. The injury had all the appearances of a poisoned arrow wound. The Vet determined a treatment was necessary and the SWT/KWS Burra Anti-Poaching Team got into position while the SWT helicopter flew Dr Limo and his team to the scene. Dr Limo darted the patient from the air, and after 8 minutes the bull became woozy. At this stage, the team moved in to shepherd him to the ground, ensuring he fell on the correct side, to enable them to access the wound: It was a staggering 10 inches deep! The arrow had gone through the bull’s ear and into his shoulder. Fortunately, the bull’s body had expelled the arrowhead, but the residual poison inhibited the wound from healing. With all the proper tools and medication at our disposal, that was easily rectified. The team flushed and cleaned the wound before administering antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. In record time, the bull was revived and back on his feet. He strolled into the wilderness, his multi-month saga at last drawn to a close. Special delivery — Lima Lima has given birth! Her baby boy, Lenny, is an effervescent little elephant, just like his mum. We’re busy writing up the story, but couldn’t wait to share this joyful news with you! — It feels especially poignant that Lima Lima went into labour on Giving Tuesday. By saving one elephant’s life, we pave the way for so many others. Yesterday, as you rallied behind our cause, an orphan raised through our Orphans’ Project was bringing the next generation into the world. What a beautifully fitting symbol of our mission. — And if you want to reacquaint yourself with our new mum, the extraordinary Lima Lima, visit: swt.bio/lima-lima #wildlife #sheldricktrust #animals #elephants #sheldrickwildlifetrust #baby #newbaby #newborn #babyelephant #newlife #GivingTuesday #conservation #generations

Trapped elephants have been a theme of this dry season. As waterholes dry up animals must turn to other sources of water, which con come at a cost! This was one of our latest rescue missions — extracting three elephants from a dam in Kilibasi, south of Tsavo. The dam was very deep and steep-sided, and the trio had no hope of escape on their own. After receiving reports from the local community, our teams mobilised to the scene with KWS. Wildlife Works volunteered their backhoe for the operation, which our flatbed truck transported to the dam. After hours of digging, we managed to create a narrow passage for the elephants to clamber to safety. Mission accomplished, with all three lives saved! *While the problem may seem simple to solve, there are growing numbers of wells and dams dotted across Kenya’s ranches and community lands, each under their own jurisdiction. There is work being done to wildlife-proof watering points, but it’s a big challenge. In the meantime — thanks to our donors — we can be there to answer the call for any animal, elephants or otherwise, who finds themselves in a sticky situation. Bean’s Bedtime! In the wild, rescued orphan warthog Mr Bean would have enjoyed the warmth of his mother, siblings, and a burrow at night. In our care, he has a hot water bottle! Every evening, Peter prepares Bean's bed-fellow, which the tiny piglet absolutely adores! We provide tailored care to each orphan we rescue. They are all individuals, plus, the needs of an elephant differ to those of a rhino, much as the needs of a warthog differ to a giraffe. These are all species currently being raised at our units. with the focus of helping them reclaim a life back in the wild when grown. One elephant’s breakfast is apparently another’s playground! Miale has no interest in eating lucerne – less than a month old, she has no teeth to chew and only has eyes for mum Mudanda’s milk – but all this hay offers excellent cushioning for this spirited girl’s morning games. At only a month old, Miale is a long way from perfecting the art of dust bathing, but you’ve got to admire her effort! Over time, she will learn crucial skills like these from her mother and herd – all orphan elephants rescued and raised by the Sheldrick Trust, and now successfully living in the wild. If you missed Miale’s arrival - her mum Mudanda gave birth right outside our Voi Stockades - you can read about it & watch a video of an hours old Miale at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/mudanda-miale #sheldricktrust #babyelephant #animalrescue #kenya #wildlife #animals #elephant #sheldrickwildlifetrust #dust #mum #newbaby #learning

The Baby of Umani…for now! Tomorrow, Mwana hits the big 18 (months!), but there’s no need for additional fanfare as she’s already doted on from dusk till dawn by a flock of nannies. This morning, with the day only just beginning for the herd of rescued orphans, Mwana decided it was already time for a lie down and frolic in the dust. As ever, this meant the whole herd coming to a halt, with dutiful nannies Enkesha and Kiasa flanking their charge as she enjoyed herself. Mwana is currently unique among the herd. While the others are each orphans we have rescued and raised, she is the daughter of an orphan and the herd’s matriarch, Murera; one of our greatest success stories. Read the incredible story behind Mwana and her mum, Murera, at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/murera-baby-mwana [There’s excitement on Umani’s horizon, with 3 of the herd’s older females being heavily pregnant.
