By now you've probably heard that Kanye West and Bianca Censori caused a scene at the Grammys last week, with Bianca wearing a see-through minidress that left nothing to the imagination. Kanye called it “art,” saying, “We tailored that invisible dress 6 times and just like magic poof we disappeared.” But let’s be real - he didn’t disappear. She did. And we didn’t realise it because we are so used to watching women disappear into their own bodies, their worth and agency drowned out by the spectacle of how much or how little they’re wearing, that we don't even notice it anymore. In the past week people have been debating whether she was forced into it, whether Kanye is controlling her, whether this was performance art or just another stunt. And I've even heard conversations about her genitalia. While the whole thing seems shocking, have you noticed how natural it feels to be discussing a woman's body again? You see, it’s always women's bodies that are being exposed, consumed, dissected. We’ve seen it on red carpets, in music videos, in advertising, in film. Women’s bodies sell everything from perfume to fast food to expensive cars. They cause outrage, headlines, moral debates. They’re covered up, stripped down, censored, and displayed - depending on what serves the moment. And I can’t help but wonder - what if the roles were reversed? What if Kanye showed up naked while Bianca stood next to him, fully clothed? Would cameras have even taken pictures? Would they be circling the internet for days? Would people be discussing his body parts on TV and radio? No. Because if a man showed up naked to an event like this, he’d be arrested. His nudity wouldn’t be entertainment or a topic of conversation - it would be a crime. But when it’s a woman? It’s just another headline, another viral moment, another body up for public consumption. Why? Because men’s bodies belong to them. Women’s bodies belong to everyone. And that’s the real issue 🤷♀️ #grammys #kanyewest PS I didn’t create this image I found it online and thought it was brilliant in showing the roles reversed. Not sure who to credit though. sorry!
