Transparently, pride was and is something I’ve historically struggled with because I always felt like I was never enough for any community I found myself in. I was obviously never going to be “str8” or masculine enough for the heteros and I never felt queer enough for my own community. When I had come out of the closet at the age of 21 in college, I was surrounded by other ghey men in musical theatre who were nothing like me. I had no other person to look up to or see myself in. There wasn’t any clear trajectory to follow. A moment that should have felt like an immense relief actually felt like further isolation. Sure, it was relieving to feel like I didn’t need to hide my sexual nature but it felt like showing up to a party you were FINALLY invited to and all the guests still didn’t see you. I truly felt like I’d never be seen or understood by any community and maybe never would. Nobody did anything to make me feel this way. The LGBTQIA didn’t bully me. It was just a feeling. I didn’t like the same things most ghey men liked. I found comfort and solace in the misunderstood yet strong feminine figures I referenced above while most young ghey boys were idolizing Britney Spears. And although I very much liked pop culture and femme icons most str8 guys my age didn’t prefer, I still was a product of Y2K boy culture and genuinely liked WWE wrestling, baseball, and riding bikes in the woods. When I came out, there were times I’ve been fetishized as a “top” or objectified because I wasn’t a “fem”. And so sometimes I would find myself trying to play up on my masculine qualities while rejecting the feminine side of me that I was still very much in touch with. I encompass both feminine and masculine qualities. We all do. And for anyone reading this that may feel the same or may be experiencing a similar trajectory, know you don’t need to be any ONE thing. We are everything. I’ll be honest, I still struggle with feeling understood and seen by any community. I’ve never been alternative enough for the weirdos and I’ll certainly never be normal enough for the 9-5ers. Additionally, I’m an artist which another layer of isolation in itself. But please understand I don’t say any of this to complain - I am SO grateful for all of it and I wouldn’t change a damn thing. I love who I am and I’ve accepted I’m a bit of an enigma to everyone and it’s been my greatest super power. I say all of this to be a beacon for others in the LGBTQIA community who may feel invisible. I’ve always existed in the in between space. The grey in between the black and white. We all do. Some of us just a little moreso than others. What I’ve truly realized is that progress is learning to be understood and seen by myself. And realizing that’s enough. I don’t need to meet a quota or check off this made up checklist to be queer. I am. And I’m here. And I know there are others out there like me that never felt accepted by any one group in particular. I see you. You have a place. And you are enough. You are everything.
